Sarus Cranes

Sarus Crane is the world's tallest flying bird. Of the 15 species of cranes found in the world, 11 species are globally threatened and the Sarus Crane is one of these threatened species. Sarus is the only crane species whose common name is derived from Sanskrit. "Sarus" means "from a wetland", or "from a water body". The world’s largest Sarus Crane population is found in India. The state of Uttar Pradesh alone has nearly 70% of the global population of this magnificent bird. Apart from India, Sarus Cranes are found in Nepal, Pakistan (one or two pairs), China (one pair), Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand (reintroduced birds only since the wild cranes are extinct), Vietnam, and Australia. In India this magnificent species is found in the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttrakhand, Uttar pradesh, Madhya pradesh, Maharastra, Rajsthan and Gujrat.
