Suheldev Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 452 sq km on the Northern side of Indo-Nepal border in Balrampur and Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh. It is an important habitat for leopards. It was established in the year 1988. It has a reserve forest area of 220 sq km. The entire Sanctuary and its reserve forests are in the form of a strip of about 120 km long and 6-8 km wide natural forests on the Indo-Nepal International border from east to west. There are Nepal's forests in the Northern boundary of the Sanctuary which form an ecological Corridor in the area. Thers are 05 ranges in the Sanctuary Area namely West Sohelwa, East Sohelwa, Bankatwa, Barahwa and Tulsipur, and 02 ranges in the Reserve Forest namely Rampur and Bhabhar Range. One range namely Unit Tulsipur is also a part of Sohelwa Wildlife Division falling in the Social Forestry area of the Division. All natural forests have precious biodiversity in their zones.

Sanctuary is full of natural resources, consisting deep dense forests and wildlife, it holds a uique place in the state from the perspective of natural landscapes and beauty. It is one of the diversified ecosystems of north region.

There are ranges of Himalaya adjacent to Sanctuary. Above that there are dense forests, pastures in the forest areas and different water channels, connected to them. Topography of these forests is uneven. There are ups and downs at different places. Nalas of the area are very important. In rainy season, they possess capacity of carrying anything with them. The Natural trails with Nalas make the scenery of sanctuary so adorable. One of the best forest areas in north region, the importance of the sanctuary can be understood only after its visit, as it has the power to communicate a new energy for the burdensome people from their busy life of the city, wandering in search of peace.

Various species of migratory and local birds can be seen tweeting in the waterbodies of the sanctuary. The presence of thousands of birds in the middle of November to March provides a unique and beautiful look to all the waterbodies of the sanctuary which is definitely the point of attraction for any tourist.This sanctuary with its natural endowment is a potential Eco-Tourism site, where the tourists can be attracted to natural resources, landscape and wildlife. The sanctuary is situated near important Buddhist Circuit of the state. International Buddhist pilgrim come to Holy Buddhist pilgrimage Shravasti, located on the southern border of the sanctuary and also visit towards other Buddhist Pilgrimage as Kapilavastu, Lumbini and Kusinagar situated on the Buddhist circuit. There is a plurality of people of the Tharu tribe in West Sohelwa, Rampur and Bhabhar range, which is a unique identity of this sanctuary. This tribe, which resembles the Mongolians, attracts tourists with its simplicity, special attire and culture. The famous Temple of 'Shri Devi Patan' is located in Tulsipur town, symbolizing the faith of Hindus in the vicinity of sanctuary, where lakhs of devotees come from every year to show their respect. Tulsipur is also known as 'Gateway of Suheldev Wildlife Sanctury'.

Vegetation: Primarily Sheesham, Khair, etc are commonly found. Jaamun Trees. Jigna, Haldu, Faldu plants etc can also be seen. Medicinal plants also have their fair share in the forest area.

Wild Animals: Tigers, Leopard, Cheetal, Bear, Wolfe, Hare, Jackal, Wild Boar, Sambar, Mankey, Langoor, Python ,Otters etc can be commonly sighted. A number of birds like Black Partridge, Quails, Peacocks, Kingfishers, Bulbuls, Mynahs, Eagles, Nightingales, Cuckoo, and Owls etc also inhabit the forest area.

Large water bodies /reservoirs like Chittorgarh, Kohargaddi, Bhagwanpur, Girgitha, Khairmaan and Raziataal dot the sanctuary area. These water-bodies attract a large number of local and migratory birds. Of all the water bodies in the sanctuary, Chittorgarh, Bhagwanpur and Raziataal offer a more scenic and enthralling experience.
