Notified in 1990, the Bakhira Sanctuary, spread over an area of 29 sq kms, constitutes the Bakhira tal, adjoining wetlands, Gram Samaj land and some agricultural land where people continue cultivation. Over 40,000 migratory waterfowl fly down to the Sanctuary every year, while resident birds like purple moorhen and swamp hen nest here. More than 23 species of waterfowl have been reported in the sanctuary, which includes 5,000 purple moorhens.
