With the aim of safeguarding the fauna and flora of the Vindhyachal region, the Kaimoor Wild Life Sanctuary was established in 1982. It is spread over an area of 501 square kms in Sonbhadra, District Mirzapur in the Vindhyachal Range. The Kaimoor Wild Life Sanctuary is famous for its Black Buck. A large variety of vegetation is found in the mixed, dry, deciduous forests that cover the area: the primary tree vegetation being Baakli, Mahua, Dhaak and Bamboo. The wild life comprises of Black Buck, Chinkara, Four-Horned, Blue-Bulls, Sambar, Cheetal, Bear and Leopard etc. Apart from these, pythons, crocodiles and different species of snakes are also found. In the wetlands, �migratory birds� are spotted easily. Water-Holes and Watch �Towers at vantage points, provide the tourists and visitors a first-hand experience of watching birds and animals in their natural habitat. The southern boundary of the Sanctuary is formed by the River Son.

Pre-historic murals found in the �Lakhnia� and other hilly regions and the pre-historic fossils of the Pre-Cambrian Times in the �Salakhan� area are unique feature of the sanctuary. Within the Sanctuary premises, near the �Mukha Waterfall� is an inscribed �SWASTIK� symbol and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva; the statues of which are a major attraction for the tourists and visitors. The other places of tourist attraction and importance are the Eco-Valley, Black Buck Valley, Beauty of Sone and Lord Shiva�s temple at Kanda Kot.
